Meet Kirsty, UK, diagnosed June 2020
"My name is Kirsty. I am from the UK. I have been with my partner for 10 years and had been on the contraceptive implant for 9 years. I had it removed February 2020 and we started trying for our little one, getting pregnant on my first cycle. We were so over the moon and all our family was so happy for us.
I had a little bit of pain, nothing serious, but me being a worrier, I got a scan at 6.5 weeks ( I knew I was that because I monitored when I ovulated). I was measuring 5.5 weeks. They said the sac was in the right place and to come back in 2 weeks time. Those two weeks passed and I was feeling extremely nauseous to the the point where I couldn’t eat or drink anything. My headaches was unreal and I had slight spotting. At my 8 week scan, they show me the heartbeat and the baby and said, "Congratulations." I do recall that I had a swollen tummy and a 'baby bump'. I was then told to take ordered bloods. I asked the nurse why, if the sonography is right, are they asking me to to do bloods. She said they think it couple be a molar pregnancy. I went home and worry search the internet; I wish I hadn’t. I was asked to come back on Monday for another scan with a “fresh set of eyes”.
On this visit they tell me that the baby looks fine, placenta looks good and to come back on the Wednesday, 2 days later, for another scan by an expert (the one scheduled didn’t turn up that visit). It was brushed off as a normal pregnancy and go plan for my next appointment for my 12 week scan. However, I demanded another scan at 10 weeks, which I am so glad I did because little behold I turned up 2 weeks later at my 10 weeks scan to be told there is no heartbeat, and that in fact the baby had passed away and there was a very larger cystic area. I had to have another scan to confirm the date of the pregnancy loss. I had lost the baby at 9 weeks and 5 days. They then tell me it was in fact a suspected molar pregnancy and that I would need a d & c procedure to remove the baby and the placental tissue and it would be sent off to Sheffield Weston Park Hospital to be tested.
There was a very long delay in my pregnancy unit referring me. It was a long wait but when I the phone call telling me it was in fact a partial molar pregnancy and that I had to be monitored weekly with urine to monitor hcg levels. It took awhile to go down; it was horrible with the worry and anxiety, especially worried I would have choriocarcinoma. I got a negative urine result with Iv was (0.34) or less after 12 weeks, ordered to take blood test to check the bloods. I had two blood tests and it was still in my system. Finally, I got the all-clear in my blood after 17 total weeks of testing and worrying! I hope we get our rainbow! xx"
